How long does it take to install solar panels?

Written by Clare Whitehall | Jun 21, 2024

If you’re thinking about installing solar panels to your home, it’s natural to have questions and concerns about how long the installation process might take, and how far it might disrupt your daily routine.

At Projects4Roofing, we completely understand these concerns, and we’re committed to putting your mind at rest with total transparency about our process, and a fast, efficient approach to solar panel installation.

Our aim is to make sure you’re fully informed every step of the way, and to reduce any disruption by completing your installation as quickly as possible - allowing you to unlock the benefits of clean solar energy to help bring down your energy costs.

To give you an idea of how efficient we can be, our standard solar panel installations typically take one day, with battery installations potentially needing an extra day for electrical work.

Want to understand more about what happens when you choose Projects4Roofing for your solar panel installation? In this article, we’ll take you through our process, step by step.

Step 1: An initial consultation call

The first step in our process is an initial consultation call, where we’ll ask for basic details like your name, address, and what you are looking to achieve with your solar panel installation.

This initial conversation helps us understand your specific needs, and also gives us an opportunity to put your mind at ease by explaining how we work, the steps involved, and what you can expect from us throughout the installation process.

Many customers also take this opportunity to ask our team any questions they might have. Our team is well-prepared to answer any of your queries, and talk through any of your concerns - making sure you feel confident to move forward with your solar panel installation project.

Step 2: Research and proposal

If you tell us that you’d like to proceed with your solar panel installation after our initial call, we move on to the research and proposal phase.

We’ll take all the information you provided about your property, and enter it into our advanced software. We’ll then receive analysis about the amount of roof space you’re likely to have available, the orientation and angle of your roof, and any potential shading issues.

Based on this information, we’re able to create a tailored proposal for you - including the types of solar panels that would be best suited for your property, the estimated costs, and how much electricity we’d expect your installation to generate.

At this stage, we really want to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about whether a solar panel installation is right for you.

All of our proposals are completely transparent and easy to understand, giving you the peace of mind that there are no hidden costs or surprises further down the line.

Step 3: Survey and discussion

If you’re happy with our proposal, the next step in our solar panel installation process is to conduct a survey of your property.

The software we use for the proposal stage is generally very accurate - but it’s important that we review your property in person to make sure the details we have are correct, and also assess the integrity of your roof.

During our survey, our team will inspect your roof to ensure it’s in good condition and can support the weight of the solar panels. We’ll also take precise measurements and identify any potential issues that our software might have missed.

Our team will explain the findings of the survey with you in detail and discuss any necessary repairs or upgrades that might be needed ahead of your solar panel installation.

Following our survey, we’ll provide you with a more thorough, detailed final proposal.

Step 4: Agree on installation date

Once you accept our final proposal, we’ll work with you to agree on a suitable installation date, and also a date for your scaffolding to be erected - usually a couple of days before we install your solar panels.

We appreciate that you may have a busy schedule, and we aim to be as flexible as possible.

Our goal is to complete your solar panel installation as efficiently as possible while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.

To help you understand what to expect, we’ll provide you with a detailed timeline of the installation process so that you know exactly what’s going to be happening on your property when we install your panels.

Step 5: Scaffolding erection

We know it can be inconvenient and can look unsightly - but erecting scaffolding a day or two before your installation is important to allow our team to work safely and efficiently.

Our experienced team will make sure the scaffolding is erected quickly and securely, taking care to protect your property and minimise any disruption to your daily life.

Step 6: Solar panel installation

During the solar panel installation process, our team will install the necessary rails and brackets before securely attaching solar panels to your roof.

We’ll double check that your solar panels are firmly anchored and can withstand common British weather conditions, including strong winds and heavy rain.

Once your panels are in place, we’ll conduct thorough testing to make sure that everything is working as it should -  including checking the electrical connections and ensuring the system is generating power as expected.

Also, keep in mind that whilst the roofers are installing the solar panels, the electrician will be inside your home installing the inverter and the necessary electrical connections.

A lot of customers are surprised at how quickly we work, with most standard solar panel installations being completed within a single working day, and installations with battery storage being completed within 2 days.

Step 7: Scaffolding removal

Once your solar panel installation is complete, the next step is to dismantle and remove the scaffolding around your property.

We understand you’ll want the scaffolding removed as quickly as possible, which is why we always aim to remove it within a couple of days of your installation being completed.

Our team will take care to ensure that your property is left clean and tidy before we leave.

Step 8: Registration and documentation

The final step of our installation process involves registering your solar panel system with the UK power networks and providing you with a homeowner information pack.

Your information pack contains everything you need about your new solar panel system, including maintenance tips and warranty details.

We’ll also provide you with the certification you need to be eligible for the Smart Export Guarantee scheme and take full advantage of the financial benefits of your solar panels.

Additionally, you’ll receive a 2-year workmanship guarantee certificate, underwritten by the Consumer Protection Association, giving you complete peace of mind about your solar panel installation.
