3 Ways to Make the Most Out of Your Conservatory This Autumn

Written by Clare Whitehall | Oct 06, 2023

The nights are getting darker earlier, there’s more of a chill in the air, and the kids are preparing to start a new year at school.

Yep, the end of summer is upon us.

But while it's natural to feel a bit down about the end of the warmer, longer summer days, autumn has a unique appeal.

As autumn approaches, we get to appreciate the beauty of the changing seasons as the leaves shift to wonderful shades of orange, yellow, and red, and our gardens come alive with autumn wildlife gearing up for winter.

There’s no better place to appreciate the autumn changes in your garden than from the warmth and comfort of your conservatory.

In this article, we will look at three ways to make the most of your conservatory this autumn - from decorations and aesthetics to conservatory roof insulation and the potential uses for your space.

1. Embrace seasonal aesthetics

Autumn is the perfect time to transform your conservatory into a warm, cosy, and inviting space that helps you appreciate the beauty of the season.

Embrace warm and earthy colours: as the colours on the trees start to change, why not decorate your conservatory with the rich hues of autumn to complement it?

Add a few pops of rustic red, golden yellow, and rich brown to your conservatory through accessories like cushions or rugs to instantly transform the ambiance of your conservatory space and create a warm and cosy feel.

Enhance your comfort with soft furnishings: As things start to get a bit colder outside, you can turn your conservatory into a warm, cosy retreat by adding a range of soft furnishings.

Try placing a plush throw on chairs, or window seats, to provide both additional warmth and a touch of luxury to your conservatory.

Decide on some autumn-inspired decor: the little details can make a big difference. To fully embrace autumn in your conservatory, why not consider some seasonal decorations like dried flowers, foliage, or branches with colourful leaves? You can get some really creative handmade autumn-inspired decorations on sites like Etsy.

You might also consider enhancing your conservatory space by including some scented candles with autumn fragrances to create a soothing and relaxing atmosphere. Maybe a bit of Spiced Pumpkin in the run-up to Halloween.

2. Improve your roof insulation

As the autumn season brings colder weather, you’ll want to ensure your conservatory remains at a comfortable temperature for you and your family to enjoy.

If you’ve currently got a glass roof or polycarbonate roof on your conservatory, you might already be aware of how warm it can get in the height of summer and how cold it can get in autumn and winter.

This is because glass and polycarbonate roofs are not thermally efficient, and in colder temperatures, they allow a lot of the warmth of your conservatory to escape through the roof.

This isn’t good news for maintaining a comfortable, stable temperature in your conservatory space. And it’s also not good news for your energy bills.

One of the most effective ways to help maintain a comfortable temperature in your conservatory all year round is to consider installing a solid roof.

A solid roof conservatory is more affordable than you might think and is far more energy efficient than glass or polycarbonate. By improving the roof insulation in your conservatory, you can reduce heat loss during colder weather and keep your conservatory nice and warm - helping reduce your energy bills in the process.

Solid roof conservatories come with a wide range of additional benefits - you can say goodbye to pesky leaks and draughts, rid your conservatory of condensation and dampness, and prevent external noises from spoiling the enjoyment of your space.

3. Consider spending more time in your conservatory

If you’re like a lot of homeowners that have a conservatory with a glass or polycarbonate roof, you’ll most likely spend lots of time in your conservatory during spring and summer - but use it less during the darker, colder autumn and winter months.

This doesn’t need to be the case.

Your conservatory has the potential to be a valuable and functional space throughout the entire year. Once you have the right insulation and stability of temperature in your conservatory, you can transform it into a space that suits your needs at different times of the year.

If you’re thinking about how you might use your conservatory this autumn, we’ve got some suggestions:

A home office with plenty of natural light
It’s estimated that 38% of UK workers are still working at home for parts of the week, with 13% working fully remotely in 2023.

If you’re one of these home workers, why not consider setting up a home office in your conservatory?

It’s actually been found that exposure to natural light can help improve your sleep, increase your production of Vitamin D, and even keep seasonal depression at bay.

So why not take advantage of the natural light and peaceful ambiance of your conservatory to create a productive workspace?

Position your desk near a window so you can enjoy the view of autumn in your garden, and maximise your exposure to natural light.

A relaxing reading nook
If creating a home office isn’t your thing, you might consider turning your conservatory into a cosy reading nook this autumn. It’s the ideal setting to sit back and unwind with your favourite book or magazine while you enjoy watching nature outside your window.

Can you picture it now? A comfortable armchair near a well-lit corner of the conservatory. A side table for your cup of tea. A small bookshelf to keep all your latest titles. Perfect!

If you’re thinking about setting up a reading nook, consider additional soft lighting like floor or table lamps to create a relaxing atmosphere.

A dining or entertaining space
Why not consider transforming your conservatory into a luxury dining area for getting together with friends and family during the autumn season?

You might need to clear some space first, but adding a dining table and chairs to your conservatory can help you accommodate guests comfortably in a relaxing space.

Consider taking some inspiration from the first section in this article, with some seasonal centerpieces on the table, decorations in warm autumn colours, and maybe some subtly fragranced autumn candles to help enhance the dining experience.
