Check out your roofline this summer

As the weather picks up and it’s time to get the sun loungers out in the garden, lie back and spend five minutes checking the roofline of your house – it could save you thousands of pounds.

If your roofline is damaged, it could fall victim to rot, warping and deeper problems such as letting water into your house and causing serious damp damage and structural issues.

Signs to look out for include flaking paint on the fascia (the band that runs around the house where the roof meets the outer walls), soffits (under the fascia) and barge boards (on the gable ends of the house). If your paint is flaking its’ likely that the boards are rotten and beginning to let water in.

Also watch for clips that have come off the guttering, as this could be a sign of rotten fascia boards. Meanwhile dripping gutters and leaf blockage could be causing damp problems if water is running down the walls.

What’s more, if you notice there is no ventilation in your roofline then there could be damp and rot problems in your loft as a result.

What is a roofline?

Roofline is a general term used to describe fascias, soffits, bargeboards, cladding and gutters that are immediately below the roof and eaves of most homes. The boards are often made of wood but modern ones are usually made from UPVC plastic.

What are fascias, soffits and bargeboards?

The fascia boards and soffits the wooden or UPVC boards that runs under the eaves of your roof. The underside of this is known as a soffit, and the fascia is the part with the gutter attached to it. Bargeboards are long strips of wood fixed to the gable end of the roof to protect the roof rafters

Replacing these roofline products, especially if they are tired looking, peeling or even rotten, will give any home tonnes of kerb appeal, making a house look attractive and well maintained.
