What setbacks might I encounter during conservatory roof replacement?

Written by Clare Whitehall | May 05, 2023

Upgrading to a solid conservatory roof can turn your conservatory into a comfortable space that your family can enjoy all year round. It’s common to feel a sense of excitement when you think about all of the ways you might use your upgraded space.

But taking on any renovation project can sometimes also feel daunting.

It’s completely understandable to have a few worries and concerns about any potential setbacks or damage to your property during the installation process.

At Projects4Roofing, we’ve installed thousands of conservatory roof replacements over the last decade.

In this article we’ll address some of the common pre-installation worries we come across, to help put your mind at ease.

Is there any risk of damage to my property during the conservatory transformation process?

It’s completely natural to be concerned about potential damage to your property during home renovation work, like a conservatory roof replacement.

But you don't need to worry when you choose a company with over a decade of experience, a well-trained installation team, and established installation processes.

Before we begin any conservatory roof replacement project, at Projects4Roofing we insist that all furniture and decorations are removed from your conservatory. If you’re not able to move all your furniture yourself, our installation team can even help you during our site set-up stage.

Removing all your furniture and possessions from the conservatory means that they are not at risk of damage during the installation. It also helps to ensure that our installation team can work freely without having to navigate obstacles.

Another common pre-installation concern is the possibility of conservatory windows being smashed or broken during the installation process.

We can’t speak for other conservatory roof specialists, but from both our memories and our records, we can’t recall a single instance of  windows being broken during a Projects4Roofing conservatory roof replacement project.

We’re a company that believes in complete transparency, so it’s worth noting that there have been a handful of instances where a window pane has been scratched during one of our solid roof conservatory installations. But please rest assured, in the unlikely case that this happens while Projects4Roofing is installing your solid conservatory roof, we’ll replace the damaged pane and reseal it at no cost to you.

What happens if the new conservatory roof doesn’t meet Building Regulations?

Any solid conservatory roof installation project needs building regulations approval. We’d recommend avoiding any conservatory roof replacement company that tells you otherwise.

If you make any significant adjustments to your property and fail to obtain building regulations approval, as the homeowner, you are liable for the cost of altering or removing any work if requested by the local authority.

And when it comes time to sell your property, buyers will expect to see appropriate completion certificates for any building works. If you don’t have the correct certificates available, it may influence the buyer’s decision to move ahead. Or it may require you to make a retrospective building regulation application to the local authority, which can be costly.

So, ensuring that your solid conservatory roof project has the appropriate building regulations approval and receives a completion certificate is essential.

When you choose Projects4Roofing for your conservatory transformation project, we’ll handle the entire building regulations process for you.

You can have peace of mind that the Guardian Warm Roof installed by Projects4Roofing is a pre-registered product and has full Local Area Building Control approval.

In terms of processes, all of the installations managed by Project4Roofing are handled through the central building control hub of Hertfordshire District Council.

Before we start any conservatory roof replacement project, we’ll come around to your property and make a note of all the relevant measurements, check for reinforcements in your corner posts, and take some photos of your existing conservatory.

We’ll upload all this information to the central building control hub and the plans and drawings for your new conservatory roof.

At this point, the local authority building control will go through the application, ask any questions and provide us with any feedback about our proposed installation before they grant approval.

It’s only once we’ve received that approval that we’ll get to work.

So we’ll never start a job without knowing we will comply with building regulations.

We always know our installations will be compliant and that the local authority has pre-approved your conservatory roof replacement project before we get started.

Is there any risk of my family suffering allergies from the materials used in the conservatory roof replacement?

We understand that your family's health and well-being are always going to be at the forefront of your mind.

We can confidently state that no materials used in a Projects4Roofing Guardian Warm Roof installation are known allergens. For additional peace of mind, our team has been installing solid conservatory roofs for over 12 years, and we have never received a report from a customer suffering from post-installation allergies.

However, it is important to note that the conservatory roof replacement process will likely create dust and may sometimes be a little noisy.

We will take all reasonable measures to try to prevent dust from entering your home, such as sealing off entrances between your conservatory and home and completing a thorough clean-up once the project is completed. And during the 7-8 day installation process, we’ll also work as carefully and quietly as possible to make things minimally disruptive to your daily lives.

But if there is a member of your family that is likely to be sensitive to dust or loud noises, it may be worth considering arrangements that would make them more comfortable during the installation process.

How long is it before my conservatory roof needs to be replaced again?

The lifespan of your conservatory roof depends on the material it is made from.

Most glass and polycarbonate conservatory roofs can last between 10 and 15 years before they need to be replaced.

One of the issues facing polycarbonate roofs is that they become discoloured and brittle over time with continued exposure to the sun's UV rays. It’s also common for glass and polycarbonate roofs to develop issues such as panels slipping and seals deteriorating, which can cause frustrating leaks and draughts.

You don’t have these issues with a solid conservatory roof.

A solid roof conservatory can last up to 50 years, and is typically easier to maintain and keep in good condition than a glass roof or polycarbonate roof.

So you won’t need to worry about replacing your roof again anytime soon if you choose a solid roof conservatory.

To give you complete peace of mind, the Guardian Warm Roofs installed by Projects4Roofing have a 20-year workmanship warranty. We also offer a 10-year product warranty guarantee on our installations.

Are there any other common mistakes that might happen during a conservatory roof replacement?

One of the most common mistakes people make during a conservatory roof replacement actually comes down to choosing the wrong partner.

If you choose a company that doesn’t have the relevant experience with solid roof conservatory installations, you may face issues further down the line that aren’t immediately visible.

For example, an installation may look perfect from the outside and doesn’t raise any concerns when you’re asked to sign it off. But if the installation team hasn’t taped up all of the battens or properly secured the insulation, long-term condensation issues with your roof are likely to develop.

That’s why choosing a conservatory roof replacement partner you can trust is important.

At Projects4Roofing, we are Guardian Warm Roof Certified Installers. This means that our team has taken special training to ensure our Guardian Warm Roof installations are of the highest quality and will deliver optimal performance.

Our team also has the expertise and experience that comes with installing solid roof conservatories for over a decade.
