Will having a solid roof conservatory make it warmer in winter?

Posted by Clare Whitehall on Nov 11, 2022

Nights are getting longer, and days are getting colder. In no time at all, we’re going to find ourselves in the middle of winter.

If you live in a home that has a traditional conservatory, you may be having unwelcome flashbacks to last winter when it was so cold you couldn’t face spending any time in there.

Or perhaps with the current energy prices, you’re worrying about how much it will cost to keep your conservatory heated to a comfortable temperature this year.

If this sounds like you, a solid roof conservatory could be the answer to all your problems and help you keep warm in your conservatory this winter.

Will a solid roof help my conservatory be warmer?

Replacing your glass or polycarbonate roof with a solid conservatory roof will help improve your conservatory's warmth.

A properly insulated solid roof conservatory can reduce the amount of energy that escapes through your roof.

Keeping heat inside your conservatory, rather than having it escape through the roof, will naturally help make your conservatory warmer.

A solid roof conservatory is more energy efficient than a conservatory that uses traditional roof materials and can help save on your home energy bills.

What’s more, as well as keeping you warmer in winter, having a solid roof conservatory can regulate the temperature during summer months and prevent your conservatory from getting too hot.

So, as you can see, choosing to invest in a conservatory roof replacement from Projects4Roofing can help keep your conservatory at a comfortable temperature all year round.

How do solid roofs impact my conservatory's indoor temperature?

A conservatory roof made from glass or polycarbonate is not thermally efficient.

When reviewing the energy efficiency of a structure, a lot of focus is placed on the U-value. The U-value basically measures how well heat is retained by a structure. The more effective a structure is at retaining heat, the lower the U-value (the lower the U-value, the better).

As a generalisation, it is estimated that most traditional conservatories that use either glass or polycarbonate as their conservatory roof materials have a U-value between 1.6 and 2.4.

An insulated solid conservatory roof can reduce the U-Value by more than 90%.

To comply with the latest updates to Part L of the building regulations, the U-Value for the solid roof of your new insulated conservatory must achieve a U-value of 0.15 or below.

So if you choose a reputable partner like Projects4Roofing that complies with all building regulations and achieves a U-value of 0.15, the heat transfer through your roof should reduce considerably when you replace your conservatory roof.

Your new solid roof conservatory will be able to retain more heat and help to keep you warm during the winter months.

Should I invest in replacing my conservatory roof?

If you currently have a conservatory with a traditional glass or polycarbonate roof, it will most likely be too cold to enjoy as a room during the winter months, and it’s not going to be helping your energy bills.

Choosing to convert your conservatory roof with Projects4Roofing can deliver you the insulated conservatory of your dreams that is ideal for you to enjoy all year round.

But the benefits of a solid roof conservatory don’t end with enjoying a comfortable, consistent temperature throughout the year.

There is a whole range of benefits that come with investing in a solid roof conservatory, including

  • Increasing the available space in your home.
  • Adding value to your property.
  • Minimising outside noises.
  • Reducing the amount of condensation, dampness, and mould in your conservatory.
